Anton Stach has a fresh route back into Germany contention after Jurgen Klopp replaced Julian Nagelsmann as head coach. The Leeds United midfielder, 27, shone in his first season after arriving from TSG Hoffenheim.
Willy Gnonto remains on standby with Italy, who are seeking a new manager after failing to qualify for the World Cup. Sky Sports News reports that Pep Guardiola has turned down the role.
Stach’s form earned a recall in March, when he was selected for friendlies against Switzerland and Ghana. He played 10 minutes off the bench against Switzerland, then was an unused substitute against Ghana.
An ankle injury late in the season muddied his prospects, and although it proved minor he was left out of Nagelsmann’s squad for this summer’s tournament in the USA, Mexico and Canada.
Germany then exited in the last 32, losing 4-3 on penalties to Paraguay after a 1-1 draw following extra-time. Nagelsmann resigned in the aftermath.
The change at the top could benefit Stach, who has three caps, as Klopp begins his rebuild. Gnonto has not featured for Italy since September 2023, so his wait goes on.
