Miroslav Klose could return to Lazio as head coach if Maurizio Sarri leaves, La Gazzetta dello Sport suggests.

Lazio have endured an underwhelming campaign despite a Coppa Italia run, and will finish between ninth and 11th in Serie A.

Sarri, who rejoined on a two-year deal last summer, has voiced dissatisfaction with 2025-26 and left his position uncertain. After the Derby della Capitale defeat by Roma on Sunday, he said he had not been listened to, was far from happy, and that both parties would review matters after the season.

Klose, the World Cup’s all-time leading goalscorer, spent the final five years of his playing career in Rome, scoring 54 Serie A goals in 139 appearances between 2011 and 2016.

He began coaching in 2022-23 with Austrian Bundesliga side Rheindorf Altach, where he was dismissed in March 2023. After a year out, he took over 2. Bundesliga outfit 1. FC Nuernberg and secured a mid-table finish in 2024-25, placing 10th.

The report highlighted his use of young talent at Nuernberg, noting his 2024-25 squad was the youngest across Germany’s professional leagues, with an average age around 23. In 2025-26, despite many tipping them for relegation, he has improved that return to finish eighth.

Claudio Lotito knows and appreciates Klose. The Lazio president is expected to meet Sarri soon to discuss his future, and for now the situation remains unresolved.
