City team-mates Rebecca Knaak and Laura Wienroither lined-up against each other on Tuesday evening as Germany met Switzerland in the Nations League.

Both defenders started for their respective nations at Max-Morlock-Stadion in Nuremburg as Christian Wuck’s side recorded a 4-1 win over Alexander Schriebl’s team.

It represented Knaak’s second consecutive start for Germany after making her senior debut for her nation in their 2-2 draw with the Netherlands in their previous outing.

And Wienroither returned to Austria’s first XI after remaining an unused substitute in their 1-0 win over Scotland four days before.

City’s deadline-day acquisition’s nation made the faster start and broke the deadlock when producing a blisteringly quick counter attack which allowed the ball to be squared to Annabel Schasching who dispatched from close range inside the third minute.

The visitors then almost doubled their lead midway through the first half when Julia Hickelsberger drove into the box but saw her low effort well saved by the legs of Stina Johannes.

They were then made to rue the missed attempt when Germany equalised five minutes before half-time and Knaak was at the heart of the attacking move.

City's defender met the ball at the back post from a free-kick, sending it across the face of goal, where Laura Freigang was on hand to tuck into an empty net.

Germany then carried their momentum into the second half and took the lead 10 minutes after the interval when Linda Dallman beat the offside trap to collect the ball inside the box and coolly slot home.

Giovanna Hoffmann extended the hosts' advantage to two with 20 minutes remaining when she was teed up by Dallman, who regained possession, before dispatching expertly.

Wuck's team then rounded off the scoring with their fourth of the evening when Vivien Endemann was afforded time on the edge of the box before she drilled into the bottom corner.

It means Knaak's Germany are currently sitting first in League A Group 1 on four points and Austria remain on three after two matches played each.
