However, a Filip Jorgensen mistake allowed substitute Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to set up Vitinha, who made it 3-2.

Kvaratskhelia proved to be the difference-maker after coming off the bench.

The Georgian winger took the game to Chelsea, running at their defence every opportunity he got. He was direct, relentless and fearless.

He bagged a brace and earned himself the man of the match award following an electrifying display.

Kvaratskhelia showed Chelsea exactly what they are missing in their ranks, a left-winger that can take on his man and make a difference in the final third.

Chelsea signed Alejandro Garnacho and Jamie Gittens last summer, but neither of them has managed to nail down a starting berth.

They do not have Kvaratskhelia’s otherworldly dribbling ability and decisiveness. Both men started from the bench as Pedro Neto got the starting berth.

The Portuguese winger recorded an assist but was generally poor. He was guilty of losing the ball too much and not taking on his man enough to make a dent.

Chelsea desperately need a winger of Kvaratskhelia’s ilk this summer if they are to progress as a club.

They are crying out for a fearless dribbler that can destabilise the opposition’s defence the way Kvaratskhelia toyed with Chelsea’s rearguard yesterday.

The club’s sporting directors made a mistake by not bringing someone with that profile, and they must correct their errors this time.

One or two of Garnacho, Neto and Gittens will have to make way for a more impactful winger.
