The writing had been on the wall for Scott Parker’s side for a number of weeks, with the club suffering the drop with four games to spare.

The Clarets earned promotion from the Championship last season, but have been unable to establish themselves back at a top flight level long-term.

A fifth minute goal from Erling Haaland proved enough for Pep Guardiola’s team to take all three points, which also moved them up to top spot in the Premier League table.

Burnley will join Wolves in planning for life in the second tier, with the third relegation place still all to play for between Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham and Nottingham Forest.

It could be a busy summer transfer window at Turf Moor, with relegation leading to uncertainty surrounding a number of key players in Parker’s side.

Kyle Walker has claimed that his future will be with Burnley next season despite their relegation to the Championship at the hands of his former club Man City.

He made it clear that his intention is to honour the contract that he signed with the Clarets 12 months ago, even if he sees the funny side of it being his former team that has confirmed the club’s relegation.

When asked if he’d like to be a part of a promotion push next season, he replied, via beIN Sports on X: “Of course. I’ve got a contract here and I’m going to honour my contract.

“As you say, football is a weird thing, 12 months ago I was in the other dressing room and look where I am now.

“But that’s football, and you take it and you move on with it.

“As long as I’m kicking a football, I’m happy, so I’d like to be here, but we’ll see what happens.”

Walker made the switch to Turf Moor last summer following the club’s second place finish in the Championship under Parker.

The full-back agreed to a two-year deal when he signed in a £5 million move from Man City, meaning he still has 12 months left on his current terms.

The 35-year-old has been a regular presence for Burnley this season, featuring in 32 of their 34 fixtures in the Premier League, starting on all but one occasion.

Planning for life in the second tier will now begin in earnest, but there are still four games to play before the campaign concludes, and players will be keen to end the year on a high note.

Next up for the Clarets is a trip to face Leeds United at Elland Road on 1 May in an 8pm kick-off.

Kyle Walker could be important to Burnley’s promotion hopes next year

Walker will be disappointed that Burnley haven’t been able to survive in the Premier League, as he surely signed a two-year deal expecting to stay in the top flight through that period.

But the drop down to the Championship will be his first time competing at that level since a loan stint at QPR in 2010/11, if he stays.

Parker will be keen to keep him around as he has a vast amount of experience, and he showed this year that he is an important part of the team.

Unless someone comes in with an offer, which seems unlikely at this stage, then Walker will be a part of their plans next season as they target promotion back to the top flight.
