Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe has endured a rough week, and will be forced to halt action for the coming days, as Los Blancos try to hang onto their season in La Liga and the Copa del Rey. Further tests have confirmed that Mbappe has an ankle injury, after initial reports of a sprain on Wednesday night.

Mbappe came off with just under 20 minutes to go in their Champions League exit to Arsenal, with the Frenchman limping off due to an ankle issue. That was the second game in a row that he did not finish, following a red card against Alaves in the first half last Sunday. As per Cadena Cope and Diario AS, the ankle sprain is ‘light’ and eight days before the Copa del Rey final, he should be back in time to face Barcelona in Seville.

Were the injury any more serious, then Mbappe would have been ruled out, but as it is, he is set to go from the start at La Cartuja. Mbappe was suspended for their clash with Athletic Club on Sunday night at any rate, and the word is that he is unlikely to be risked for Los Blancos’ trip to Getafe the following Wednesday. Depending on how his recovery goes, Mbappe could potentially feature at the Coliseum, but Real Madrid are unlikely to risk it. However the Madrid-based paper do say that Ferland Mendy and Andriy Lunin are fighting to be back fit in time for the Copa final against their rivals.

Even if Mbappe has not quite hit the heights that many would have hoped for him, he is still by a distance the top scorer for Real Madrid this season, with 33 goals to his name. He was one of the few to come out with any credit in their 5-2 defeat to Barcelona last time out, and will no doubt remain one of Carlo Ancelotti’s best weapons against Barcelona’s aggressive defence.
