The Santiago Bernabeu recently proved its pedigree as a global entertainment venue, successfully hosting the historic NFL game between the Miami Dolphins and the Washington Commanders.

The success was underscored by the presence of celebrities, including rival Atletico Madrid duo Antoine Griezmann and Koke, who publicly lauded the stadium.

However, La Liga President Javier Tebas quickly seized the opportunity to inject a dose of political sarcasm into the celebration, aiming his sharpest criticism at Real Madrid.

Tebas’ take on Bernabeu hosting NFL

Tebas claimed that Real Madrid are being ironic by hosting the NFL game in La Liga while opposing La Liga’s plans to host the Barcelona and Villarreal match in Miami.

“We have been hearing for weeks that this is a historic day because Madrid is hosting the NFL. However, we are talking about the same stadium of the club that opposed an official match being played in Miami,” he said (h/t Diario SPORT).

Tebas’s statement refers to Real Madrid standing as one of the opponents of La Liga’s idea to host the Barcelona vs Villarreal match in Miami’s Rock Hard Stadium this December.

After the plan was approved, Real Madrid emerged as a fierce opponent, arguing that moving a domestic league fixture abroad violated the competition’s integrity.

The irony Tebas highlighted is clear: the same club that fought tooth and nail against sending its own league game abroad is now celebrating the successful hosting of a foreign league’s regular-season fixture.

This is not the first time Tebas has tried to poke fun of Real Madrid, as his feud with the club runs deep, starting from Real Madrid’s open support for the European Super League project.
