Zakaria Labyad has sustained a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus damage in his left knee. According to Globo.com, imaging on Friday confirmed the injuries, he will need surgery and the club will announce the date in the coming days. He will not play again for Corinthians this season.

The Moroccan midfielder was injured after twisting his knee late in the first half of the 0-0 draw with Athletico-PR in the 21st round of the Campeonato Brasileiro.

ACL ruptures are among the most feared injuries for players and usually require long lay-offs. A review of published studies puts recovery at a minimum of six months, with an average of nine months, and combinations with meniscus damage often extend that timeline.

Signed in February on the recommendation of Dutch forward Memphis Depay, Labyad has made 17 appearances for Corinthians, three as a starter.

He is under contract until the end of this year, with an automatic extension triggered by performance targets. With the injury, he is expected to have his deal renewed while he recovers.

Head coach Fernando Diniz, speaking in a press conference, lamented the setback. He said Labyad had grown in prominence since his arrival and that he relied on him to affect games in more than one position.
