LaLiga honours Athletic for social campaign announcing Nico Williams renewal

Athletic have won LaLiga’s Best Social Media Content award for 2025, recognising creativity, impact and storytelling, for the Nico Williams contract renewal reveal that gripped the club’s channels on four July. The accolade came from a field of 42 clubs across Primera and Segunda.
According to El Correo, the club unveiled the extension with a night-time clip of a hooded Williams spray-painting ‘WIN 2035’ in white on the Barakaldo mural dedicated to the brothers, which had been vandalised shortly before. The announcement arrived amid a torrent of reports linking him with Barcelona.
Later, with his face visible in a txoko, Williams said the heart weighed most in his decision and that he was where he wanted to be, among his own. Nearly nine months on, he reappeared on camera to congratulate the club’s communications and social team for their work.
The trophy was presented in Tarragona during the V Jornadas de Clubes de LaLiga. Voting used a mixed system in which the other 41 clubs carried a 60% weighting alongside LaLiga’s Digital professionals. Athletic topped both tallies, with Getafe and Real Oviedo completing the podium.
The campaign set out to convey emotional authenticity beyond the bare news of a player choosing zurigorri belonging over offers from some of Europe’s most powerful clubs, weaving in real touches such as a stray cat captured on film.
To protect secrecy while filming in a public space, the mural scene was shot at around four in the morning. On the day of release the club’s channels amassed 65 million views, ranking Athletic second worldwide for official channel views on four July, behind Liverpool.
