According to an update from MARCA, Barcelona president Joan Laporta attended the General Assembly of the European Club Association (ECA), chaired by Nasser al-Khelaifi,
It must be noted that Laporta now shares warmer ties with the PSG president, especially after last week’s Champions League clash in Barcelona.
The outlet assures that Laporta was accompanied by Vice President Rafa Yuste, and Al-Khelaifi personally welcomed him at the hotel hosting the ECA Annual Assembly.
Although Barcelona are not yet a member of the ECA, the club is maintaining increasingly close relations with the organisation.
This gathering comes amid renewed European club opposition to the Super League, with discussions taking place since yesterday.
Notably, the ECA, in collaboration with UEFA, has worked on the new Champions League format and its revenue model.
Laporta, who is attending as a guest, is expected to formally join the now-renamed ECA, leaving Real Madrid as the sole top club outside the organisation and a strong supporter of the Super League concept.
During the Assembly, UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin reiterated his position on the Champions League model, stating:
“From the outside, they are proposing a change of model, but everything will be done from a position of unity.”
The event gathered significant attention across Europe, which eventually reaffirmed that the Champions League format will remain in place with no plans to adopt a structure closer to the Super League model.
Laporta’s attendance highlights Barcelona’s strategy of balancing relations with European football authorities while securing other benefits.
Notably, the club has already negotiated an exceptional arrangement with UEFA to play its La Liga match against Villarreal in Miami, underscoring its influence and positioning within European football.
Meanwhile, it must be noted that Juventus, after joining the ECA two years ago, has since withdrawn from the project, while Real Madrid continue to remain outside.
