Larrazabal will replace Carlos Pouso as Sestao River’s sporting director for next season after agreeing to leave Gernika. As reported by as.com, the former Athletic defender will head the first team’s sporting department in Segunda Federación.
Aitor Larrazabal, born in Loiu in 1971 and a SER pundit, bid farewell to supporters on social media, signalling the end of a cycle after securing survival.
He has served as sporting director at Urbieta for the past two seasons, following coaching spells with Lemona, Amorebieta, Barakaldo, Salamanca, Marbella and SD Logroñés. He previously ran Lezama’s sporting department at Athletic until 2015.
River are seventh in Group two of Segunda Federación with 46 points. Both Sestao River and Gernika have agreements with Ibaigane.
President Ángel Castro had also sounded out other candidates, including Óscar Sampayo, the former Arenas sporting director, and coaches such as fellow former Athletic player Javi González for the dugout. Aner Blanco has remained in charge until the end of the campaign, having been Aitor Calle’s assistant.
As a left-back, Larrazabal made 445 appearances in red and white, the 11th most official games for Athletic. He now brings substantial leadership experience.
