Alessio Romagnoli has been cleared to join Al-Sadd, ending a six-month saga over the Lazio defender’s future.
Sky Sport Italia reports that an agreement has been reached between all parties, with Lazio accepting a fee of around three million, down from about eight million discussed in January as the 31-year-old has one year left on his deal.
Al-Sadd came close in January, but Claudio Lotito’s late demands scuppered talks. The Lazio president was reportedly asking the centre-back to forgo three months of salary, a move Romagnoli rejected amid frustration over broken promises.
Personal terms were already in place and remain unchanged. Romagnoli is expected to sign a three-year contract worth six million per year.
A boyhood Lazio fan despite starting at Roma, he joined from Milan on a free in summer 2022. He has been an automatic pick across the past four seasons and was arguably their standout in 2025/26, yet tensions with Lotito and the hierarchy paved the way for his exit.
His chief backer in Qatar has been head coach Roberto Mancini, though Mancini’s future is uncertain amid suggestions he is a candidate for the vacant Italy role.
