Lazio captain Mattia Zaccagni has suffered a right thigh muscle injury. The club said in a statement on Wednesday that it occurred during the league win over Milan.

Gustav Isaksen’s 35th-minute strike sealed a 1-0 victory on Sunday. Zaccagni featured for 83 minutes before making way for Matteo Cancellieri. He showed no clear injury signs during the match.

The diagnosis is a moderate post-traumatic muscle injury involving the vastus medialis and vastus intermedius of his right thigh. The winger has already started his recovery protocol.

The recovery timeframe is unclear, but he will miss Sunday’s Serie A clash with Bologna. It is also a setback for Italy, where he is a regular under Gennaro Gattuso.

The Azzurri are intent on avoiding a third straight World Cup play-off failure. They host Northern Ireland in Bergamo on 27 March, and if they progress will face the winner between Wales and Bosnia three days later.
