Lazio’s Top Scorers Since the Departure of Icon Ciro Immobile

Artikelbild:Lazio’s Top Scorers Since the Departure of Icon Ciro Immobile

For the better part of a decade, Ciro Immobile was considered Mr. Lazio. The Italian hitman punched his name into the record books at the Stadio Olimpico, with his 207 goals in 304 appearances in all competitions between his 2016 arrival and 2024 departure securing his spot as the Eagles’ all-time top scorer. But more than that, the Euro 2020 winner became the club’s talisman.

There were some dark days during Immobile’s time in the Eternal City, but whenever he was in the starting lineup, Lazio always thought they were in with a chance. The prolific striker helped the club to the Coppa Italia back in 2019, as well as securing a top-four finish the following season, and a runners-up spot in the final campaign with the club in 2024.

Immobile Leaves Lazio

That summer, Lazio decided to part ways with their captain and hero, with Immobile departing for Besiktas at the age of 34. He has since returned to Italy after joining Bologna earlier this year, but one thing that hasn’t returned to Lazio is a regular source of goals. Immobile managed 20 or more goals in all but three of his campaigns at the Olimpico, but since his departure 18 months ago, no one in Maurizio Sarri’s squad has managed more than 17 goals.

As a result, online betting sites aren’t too positive with their outlook for the Eagles this season. Websites offering online sports betting in Canada list Lazio as a 300/1 outsider to claim the Scudetto this season. Considering that they’re currently eighth in the table and nine points behind rivals and table-toppers Roma, that lowly billing is unsurprising.

So, which players have attempted to fill the void left by Immobile’s departure in 2024? Here are Lazio’s top scorers since their iconic striker departed the club.

Taty Castellanos – 17 Goals

Striker Taty Castellanos was brought to the Olimpico to take some of the goal-scoring burden off Immobile in his final season with the club. The Argentinian managed just six goals, and since the skipper left the club, he has added a further 17, the most of anybody, but still not enough.

Castellanos looked to be the club’s new talisman in the immediate aftermath of Immobile’s Turkish exodus, netting three goals in his first four games as Lazio’s main man at the start of last season. Since then, however, the goals have dried up somewhat. The former Girona loanee managed 14 goals last term, but has suffered from numerous injury niggles since, causing him to miss extended game time, including being restricted to just six games this season.

The 27-year-old has been out with a hamstring injury for the last six weeks, but he is expected to be returning to full fitness imminently. Both Sarri and Lazio need Castellanos up to full speed as quickly as possible as they look for a reliable source of goals to propel them up the table in the coming weeks and months.

Pedro – 14 Goals

Veteran winger Pedro has done it all in the beautiful game. The Spaniard was a star of Pep Guardiola’s all-conquering Barcelona team, twice winning the UEFA Champions League alongside Lionel Messi over a decade ago. He would move on to Premier League side Chelsea and win the Premier League before heading to Italy. The former La Masia academy product was brought to the Eagles in the summer of 2021 on a free transfer from rivals Roma, and at the age of 38, he remains in the eternal city.

Last season, he was supposed to play a bit part role as opposed to being a key figure. Still, he managed to join the top score with an impressive 14 goals. That earned him a new contract to remain with the club, and in 2025/26, he remains a trusted hand. He hasn’t been able to find the back of the net this term, but he remains the club’s second top scorer since Immobile’s departure, underlining just how badly the club has struggled for goals since their talisman went away.

Mattia Zaccagni – 13 Goals

Winger Mattia Zaccagni was entrusted with the captain’s armband following Immobile’s departure, and he has since gone on to become the new hero of the Laziali. He has 13 goals across the last 18 months, including ten last term and three this season, the most of anybody. But more than his goalscoring efforts, the Azzurri international has become his side’s main source of creativity on the left-hand side.

Unlike Castellanos and Pedro, Zaccagni has become a man who can be relied upon for game time. He has missed just one game this season, and if Lazio are to climb the table and attempt to secure European qualification, he will be the main reason why.
