Regis Le Bris confirmed that Granit Xhaka missed Sunderland’s loss to West Ham with an ankle injury and he hopes to have the Swiss international back soon.

Sunderland were beaten 3-1 thanks to goals from Crysencio Summerville, Jarrod Bowen and Matheus Fernandes for the London side. Brian Brobbey got one back, but it was too little, too late for Le Bris’ men.

Xhaka did not feature for the first time this season in the Premier League and his manager gave an update on his injury.

“It’s ankle injury,” he said. “He has a period of rest and see how long he will be.”

The match was stopped briefly because the midfielder appeared to be having an argument with a fan on the sidelines.

“I don’t know really [what happened],” Le Bris explained. “It’s always a shame when something like that happens, but I don’t know.”

West Ham are nine places below Sunderland in the Premier League as it stands, but the Frenchman accepted that they were the better team on the day.

“They were better than us,” he said “They showed good quality, they started better, more aggressiveness and more composure with the ball. We were the opposite.

“The balance went in their favour at the biggening and their scored, it was well deserved.

“Our reaction in the second half was a bit better, we tried to change the dynamic of the game. We scored once, we have the opportunity to score the second but they were simply better than us. We have to accept it.”

He was also asked why Sunderland found it so difficult at the London Stadium: “It’s tough to say,” Le Bris answered. “Necause probably there are multiple reasons. At least it shows that when you are not at the level that the league will punish you.

“[We need to show] Humility, hard work, accept the tough period. We haven’t experienced this much, but we are still a newly promoted side and it is normal to have this kind of experience. Don’t get too emotional, stay composed, not too high and not too low and move forward.”
