Lee Cattermole has been appointed Gateshead manager on a two-year deal, taking his first senior role in the dugout with the National League side.
According to Sunderland Echo, the former Sunderland and Middlesbrough midfielder held talks with interim chairman Graham Wood over the last fortnight and will begin work at the International Stadium immediately.
Cattermole made 272 Premier League appearances across Sunderland, Middlesbrough and Wigan Athletic. He ended his playing career at Dutch side VVV-Venlo in 2020 before moving into coaching with Middlesbrough’s academy, Bristol Rovers and Burnley, and the Northern Irish FA Under-17s.
He missed out on the Hartlepool United job just over a month ago. At Gateshead he will work alongside Ben Clark, who signed a long-term deal earlier this month to continue as first-team coach.
Cattermole said he is excited by the chance to manage a first team, praised Gateshead’s record of giving opportunities to first-time bosses, and stressed he has always wanted to lead. He added that his vision will take time, with clear standards and a consistent approach, and that he wants to learn the club’s identity and build it together.
