Leeds fans rode a rollercoaster as England came from behind to beat the Democratic Republic of Congo 2-1 in the World Cup round of 32.
According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, Thomas Tuchel’s men fell behind to Brian Cipenga’s early finish and toiled against inspired goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi before Harry Kane struck twice after the break.
A decade on from the Iceland Euros humiliation, fears of another early exit grew, but England stayed calm and had some fortune along the way to turn it around.
Sam Matthews said: “It’s a good job we have Harry Kane, otherwise we’d be in the plane home!” Janet Stockton said: “Can’t take anything away from DR Congo they played really well. England finally got there in the end, phew.” Lyndsey Rowson added: “Great fight, they never gave up - get in lads.”
Photographers were at the Beck and Call pub in Meanwood to capture the celebrations and tension. The victory sets up a meeting with co-hosts Mexico in the early hours of Monday morning.
