Leeds United have been handed a potential relegation boost with West Ham United concerned over Crysencio Summerville’s fitness, with nine Premier League matches remaining.
The Hammers were confirmed as Leeds’ FA Cup quarter-final opponents after Monday’s home shootout win against Brentford, a 2-2 draw after extra time followed by a 5-3 success from the spot.
Summerville was initially rested, came on at half-time, then suffered a painful-looking knock in the second half. The former Leeds winger played on but did not take any of West Ham’s five penalties.
"Let's assess him. He felt a knock. I don't know exactly what he has. It is concerning but hopefully we recover with this moment of joy. We'll get better, we'll be faster and we will be able to compete against City. Enjoy for a couple of hours and then refocus, recover well and respect your body. It was a big effort from a lot of the players. Then we have to go again," said Espirito Santo, speaking to the BBC.
Resting the Dutch winger was understandable given his form, with seven goals in his last 11 appearances across all competitions, a spell that has coincided with West Ham picking up points in the scrap.
West Ham host Manchester City at the London Stadium this weekend, with a decision on Summerville expected after further assessment. Leeds will face the Hammers on the weekend of 4/5 April for a place at Wembley, before a final-day league meeting that could decide relegation. Leeds hold a three-point cushion and superior goal difference, with Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur also between 18th-placed West Ham and 15th-placed Leeds.
