Leeds United’s pursuit of Harry Wilson has effectively ended, with a new Fulham contract now expected. Leedsunited.news reports that attention has shifted to Sevilla winger Ruben Vargas, with a £17m move being planned.

Wilson’s chase ran from the summer to deadline day, when Fulham halted a late push. Interest persisted through his expiring deal and Wales links. According to FotMob, Vargas holds a 7.19 average rating this season.

Leeds have moved on, with Adam Underwood plotting a bid for Vargas. They valued Wilson for set pieces, versatility and international experience, and Vargas offers similar qualities. Both operate on either flank and as a No 10.

Wilson has eight goal involvements in 15 matches for Fulham this season. Vargas has three goals and four assists in 12 La Liga games, only one assist fewer than Wilson. Each has more than 50 caps, and they are a year apart in age.

Vargas leads Sevilla for combined goals and assists with seven. He is joint top scorer, joint leader for chances created and has more assists than any team-mate, and he has won the most possession per 90 minutes for Sevilla.

Signed by Victor Orta for £2m in January, the Swiss winger has been a rare positive in the former Leeds sporting director’s difficult spell at Sevilla. Orta is now at Real Valladolid.

He may not be Wilson or the Premier League force that the Fulham player is, but he looks the closest alternative available to Leeds.
