Leeds United could step up their pursuit of Derby County goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterstrom as Illan Meslier nears a free switch to Arsenal after completing a medical and agreeing personal terms.

Derbyshire Live reports that Derby have granted the 26-year-old extra time off following Sweden duty, with a return expected for the pre-season tour of Austria unless Leeds make a firm approach.

Leeds intend to bring in a new goalkeeper after Meslier lost his place to Karl Darlow last season following several high-profile errors. Parma’s Zion Suzuki has been of interest, but strong competition and uncertainty over price mean Zetterstrom could come into sharper focus.

The club remain in negotiations with Darlow, now a free agent after his contract expired, and as things stand they have seen two goalkeepers depart in the past week.

Zetterstrom’s stock has risen since arriving from Djurgarden in summer 2024, with the Swede viewed as one of the standout goalkeepers outside the Premier League. His market value has increased markedly in England.

He impressed with two strong performances against Japan and France at the World Cup, where Sweden went out in the last 32. He previously drew interest from Wolves before Derby signed him, while Derby have been linked with reinforcements, including Sunderland’s Anthony Patterson, whose price tag close to 30m may be prohibitive.
