Leeds United extend Alex Cairns contract to 2028 amid goalkeeper changes | OneFootball

Leeds United have extended Alex Cairns’ contract by two years, keeping the goalkeeper at Elland Road until 2028. The 33-year-old returned in 2024 to serve as third choice in Daniel Farke’s squad.

According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, Illan Meslier has joined Arsenal as a free agent, Karl Darlow is close to confirming a move to Manchester United, and Leeds could not guarantee the veteran the number one role with plans to recruit another senior keeper this summer.

Cairns came through the Leeds academy and made his debut in the 2011/12 season, before departing in 2015 after a series of loans. He rejoined from Salford City in summer 2024, having started every league game for the Ammies in the previous campaign.

He has amassed more than 300 senior appearances and has been a regular presence around the first-team group on matchdays. The new deal maintains his role as an experienced part of the first-team squad.

He remains active with Leeds United Foundation sessions and follows captain Ethan Ampadu in committing his future this summer.
