Leeds United admire James Trafford, whose profile fits their plans, but serious hurdles stand in the way. Leeds Live notes rival interest, finances and the risk of a short loan make him a stretch target, albeit one still worth pursuing. His Burnley promotion form, 29 clean sheets in 45, explains the appeal.
He began this league campaign at Manchester City as starter for three matches, then Gianluigi Donnarumma arrived and his only further league appearance was the final day defeat to Aston Villa. The 23-year-old did play every tie in their League Cup and FA Cup wins.
A summer move feels likely, perhaps only on loan. With a five-year contract signed last year and significant wages, a permanent switch could be beyond Leeds unless the player pushes for it. Other suitors may also offer European football.
Leeds have changed their number one four times since the start of 2024/25, with Karl Darlow, now in talks as his deal expires this month, finishing both campaigns as first choice. Another signing would be a fifth change, and a one-year loan would almost guarantee a sixth in 2027.
A sale is not improbable and Leeds could meet his amortised value, about £21.6m from a £27m fee last summer. Wages are the bigger snag and may require exits flagged by chairman Paraag Marathe under incoming Squad Cost Ratio rules. Trafford is an ideal, if ambitious, swing.
