Leeds United star Junior Firpo could be open to signing new contract

Leeds United left-back Junior Firpo is open to extending his stay at Elland Road, but will wait and see how the first few months of the season go before putting pen to paper.

According to TEAMTalk, the former Barcelona man, whose contract expires next summer after he signed a four-year deal back in 2021, is happy in West Yorkshire but will not sign fresh terms unless Daniel Farke's men look capable of making another promotion push.

The Dominican Republic international has started in all four of the Whites' Championship games so far this season, and also enjoyed a successful international break with the Dominican Republic, winning both of his games with his nation and also creating an assist during a 2-0 win over Dominica.

Firpo has an impressive creative edge for a defender, and made eight assists in 29 second tier outings last term, an asset which Farke will not want to lose.

However, the 28-year-old is able to secure his future away from Elland Road as soon as New Year's Day, unless the club offer him a new deal in the coming months.

Firpo could sign an overseas contract by 1st January

If the Whites are not able to maintain their rich vein of form, Firpo could decide to leave the club, and as reported by TEAMTalk, the length of his current contract means that he is eligible to sign a pre-contract agreement to move overseas as soon as 1st January.

Unless the form of Farke's men convinces the left-back that their promotion chances are genuine, a move abroad could be on the cards for the ex-Barcelona player. He's said to be happy in Leeds and open to an extension, but it appears to rest firmly on whether Leeds can stay on the right track in the promotion race.

Back in July, Spanish journalist Gonzalo Tortosa reported that Real Betis, another of Firpo's former clubs, were interested in his services, and that the defender wanted to return to Andalusia.

While the Whites man chose to stay during the summer, and is performing well for the Elland Road outfit yet again, the prospect of returning to the La Liga side could be a tempting one, should Leeds' positive momentum come to a halt.

The West Yorkshire outfit must be pleased by the fact that Firpo is willing to extend his stay with the club, as following a tricky couple of seasons in the Premier League, the latter of which saw the Whites relegated, the Dominican Republic international has shown his class in the Championship.

He is happy at Elland Road, and the only potential stumbling block in the way of Farke and co retaining one of their starman is that he wants the club's Premier League prospects to become clearer.

If the Whites' unbeaten start is anything to go by, Firpo should have no such qualms regarding his side's chances of competing in the top-flight next season.

Leeds are not only without a loss after four games, but also looked electric during their recent 2-0 victories over Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday and Hull City heading into the international break.

The only surprise about these impressive wins was that Farke's men were not able to overcome their opponents by a wider margin, while Saturday's encounter with Burnley could prove to be a sterner test despite the Clarets' recent drop in form.

The Whites have the ability to produce stellar football in the Championship, while last season's play-off final loss should make the West Yorkshire side all the more determined to clinch promotion back to the Premier League at the second time of asking.

If the Whites can consistently perform at the level they are capable of, Firpo should be keen to renew his terms at Elland Road.
