Leeds United have unearthed gems in recent years, yet a fair few recruits scarcely got going in West Yorkshire.
According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, a list of 20 such cases includes several memorable misfires. Here are snapshots of six whose Leeds careers stalled.
Lee Trundle joined on a one-month loan in January 2009, persuaded by ex-Swansea team-mate Andy Robinson. The forward added little, his stay extended once then cut in March with 10 appearances and one goal.
Weston McKennie arrived on loan from Juventus in January 2023, his experience meant to help beat the drop. He featured regularly but made little positive impact, returning to Turin once relegation was sealed.
Hogan Ephraim managed four outings across a two-month loan from QPR. He did score against Accrington Stanley to send Leeds into the EFL Trophy semi-final.
Billy Paynter signed from Swindon Town in June 2010 with a growing scoring reputation, but it did not translate in the Championship. He waited eight months for his first goal and finished with three in 28 before a loan to Brighton.
Luke Varney joined in summer 2012 and started brightly, a goal and an assist on debut against Shrewsbury. Only seven more followed in two years, and Neil Warnock later called one League Cup miss in a win over Southampton the miss of the century.
David Norris also arrived in 2012, joining a cluster of former Portsmouth team-mates. Injuries and managerial churn restricted him, and his contract was terminated by mutual consent in 2015.
