Leeds United’s FA Cup journey ended with a flat Wembley semi-final, a conclusion that did not match the drama of earlier rounds. Supporters again travelled home without a goal to cheer.
According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, only the routine Elland Road win over Norwich felt straightforward, with Derby lit by a Willy Gnonto strike, Birmingham decided on penalties and West Ham United nerve-jangling.
Anton Stach returned early, looked bright and helped swing the contest, nearly scoring from distance. His involvement for the final few games is a clear positive.
Pascal Struijk, excellent last time out, surrendered possession for the decisive Chelsea goal and was distraught at full-time. Jayden Bogle was fit and electric once past Marc Cucurella, yet his nervy, clumsy play and defending hurt Leeds. He should never have been booked after he was set upon.
Brenden Aaronson, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Ao Tanaka had chances but could not beat Robert Sanchez. In big games chances must be taken, and Enzo Fernandez was clinical.
A goalkeeper stoppage at 80,000-plus Wembley to disrupt momentum showed why tactical timeouts should be outlawed. Until rules change they are not cheating, but authorities should act soon.
Jarred Gillett whistled for almost everything before half-time, then allowed far more after the break, leaving players guessing. He was not why Leeds lost, but this was not semi-final standard.
Off camera, Jermaine Beckford joked with Willy Gnonto, Lucas Perri crossed himself and Ally McCoist saluted fans. Tony Dorigo received a legacy cap and Leigh Nicholson earned a roar.
