Leeds United defender Gabriel Gudmundsson missed Sweden training again on Wednesday because of illness, leaving his involvement in Monday’s World Cup opener against Tunisia in doubt.

He also sat out Tuesday’s session after falling ill earlier in the week. “Everyone is in training except Gabriel who is still at the hotel,” said Sweden’s press officer, Petra Thorén. The comments were given to Aftonbladet.

“He is still in a bad state. I can't answer whether his situation has improved. I'm not the team's doctor.”

“We don't go into the health of individual players. He keeps to himself like you do when you're in a bad way. He has mild symptoms of illness. I won't go into what it is.”

Teammate Hjalmar Ekdal added: “We haven't received much information about how serious it is. He's probably in a bad way and isolated as much as he can.”

Gudmundsson had only just returned from a five-week lay-off with a hamstring injury sustained in April’s FA Cup semi-final defeat to Chelsea at Wembley. He is Graham Potter’s preferred option at left wing-back and started both World Cup qualifying play-off games.

Sweden begin against Tunisia in Guadalupe, Mexico on June 15, then face the Netherlands in Houston, Texas five days later. They finish the group against Ao Tanaka’s Japan in Arlington on June 26.
