Elland Road delivered a moving collective tribute as Leeds United drew 0-0 with Brentford on Saturday night, the remembrance overshadowing a drab contest.
According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, supporters joined family representatives of Christopher Loftus and Kevin Speight outside the East Stand, while chairman Paraag Marathe and CEO Robbie Evans laid wreaths. Inside, the teams and officials were applauded before kick-off, then thousands turned their backs in the club’s annual act of solidarity.
Brentford formed a huddle before warming up and worked on a back five. Stuart Dallas joined Marathe pitchside during the warm-up. Ethan Ampadu and Nathan Collins later greeted the families and placed wreaths in front of the West Stand.
During play, Ao Tanaka gestured apologetically to the Kop after slicing a shot over the bar into the front two rows. Ethan Ampadu complained to referee Jarred Gillett about Kevin Schade’s challenges, then spoke to the Brentford forward off the ball. Farke was furious when Aaronson punted a hopeless ball downfield.
It was a bad night for Brenden Aaronson, who repeatedly ran into Brentford shirts and saw little come off. The international break may help, or perhaps he needs a rest and Daniel Farke freshens the midfield.
Willy Gnonto stayed on the bench despite Leeds loading the box with crosses, a game seemingly crying out for unpredictability. He will not join up with Italy during the break and remains on the fringes. His frustrating season could yet ignite, but time is short.
The Premier League did not impress either. Neutrals might have reached for Netflix by half-time as set-pieces and aerial tussles dominated. Tactical timeouts are becoming farcical and, many would argue, should be outlawed.
