Sam Tierney says Leicester City know that observers are writing them off already – and that teams come to the King Power expecting an easy game.

The Foxes couldn’t make it two Women’s Super League wins in a row at home, losing 2-1 to Tottenham Hotspur after conceding two early goals.

But Tierney opened her account for the season when she got a goal back for the hosts just before half-time.

And she said after the match that the tendency to underestimate Leicester will fire them up all season.

“We believe every team comes here and thinks it’s going to be easy,” she told BBC Leicester. “We want to show them it’s not going to be easy. We know we’ve got the players in this team to graft, to work hard and to get results. Hopefully they’ve seen today that it was hard for them.

“Many more teams will struggle to come here and get points.”

Sam Tierney: I’ve got higher standards

Describing the two goals they conceded as “sloppy”, Tierney admitted she had mixed emotions after the final whistle, saying she was “disappointed but in the same breath proud.

“I’ve got higher standards. This team have got higher standards, and even though it’s early on we expect results because of how hard we’re working. Rick [Passmoor, interim head coach] spoke about it at the end with us, the process that we’re on, you can see we’re progressing and we’re working each week and getting better each week. The way we started was a bit too slow.”

And reflecting on their win over Liverpool and narrow defeat to defending champions Chelsea, as well as a midweek Subway Women’s League Cup victory over Ipswich, she said: “We have come in with confidence off the back of the last two. The Chelsea game we felt like we’d made real strides forward and we felt like we were unlucky there. Midweek, it was good for us to get people on the scoresheet and it was a slightly different game.

“But we felt confident and we do feel confident. That’s what we showed for large parts of the game, but in those two moments it’s cost us. It’s something we need to reflect on.”

Rick Passmoor: Leicester City are disappointed and frustrated

For his part, Passmoor commented: “We’re disappointed and frustrated because if we had delivered the game plan in certain moments, we’d been more proactive and engaged to prevent what we see as two soft goals.

“However, in terms of the processes, our principles, the culture we’re trying to create, you can see that in abundance.”

Leicester City are at home again next Sunday, 5th October, when they host Everton.
