The King Power side have conceded far too many chances and goals during their return Premier League voyage. The backline have been leaky, with the second worst goal difference - only to rock-bottom Southampton - and that is mainly the result of 53 goals conceded across their campaign so far. That is abysmal.
Wout Faes has been an integral part of that defensive structure this season: after playing 21 out of our 24 matches played in the Premier League, it is safe to say the Belgian is at least partly responsible for the concessions of goals. Of course, James Justin is also a major culprit, with both being right-sided, and both performing far below previously lofty heights.
It is natural for Leicester to be considering different options in defence. In recent weeks, Conor Coady, Caleb Okoli, and Wout Faes have all had rumours linking them to a move away. It is clear the Foxes want to move someone on. With the Premier League transfer window shut, the Foxes will not be able to sell either Okoli or Faes to an English club.
Luckily, it is Turkish Galatasaray who are linked to the Belgian international. The defender is of interest to the outfit looking to add another dimension to their game for European competition. What Faes does well is to step up out of defence, carry the ball strongly into attacking midfield, and even occasionally get a shot off. That is not useful in a Premier League survival campaign.
That stylistic preference to be almost more of a progressive defensive midfielder than an actual centre back has left our right-side exposed on too many occasions. In so doing, other players then have to rush in a disorganised fashion to fill the gap, thus leaving more gaps and creating space for the opposition to exploit. Justin has done poorly in taking up that space while also reconciling the need to press a marauding winger on his flank.
€20m is the stated fee the King Power side are looking for. Galatasaray have until the 11th of February should they find the funds and Leicester agree to offload Faes despite being unable to bring in a replacement and already having not brought back Harry Souttar from loan. This deal seems very unrealistic in my opinion.
Leicester City clearly need a rethink in their game plans. If they cannot rely on the backline then they must find other options on the pitch that can offer in both attack and defend. When Wilfred Ndidi returns, the Nigerian must be immediately back in the starting XI; and, the academy graduate Kasey McAteer is an obviously versatile player that ought to be starting for the Foxes.
