It was his first outing since becoming only the eighth player to make 100 appearances for the club.

Since his 2023 arrival, he has captained Inter Miami to the 2023 Leagues Cup, the 2024 MLS Supporters' Shield, the 2025 Eastern Conference title and the 2025 MLS Cup.

Individually, he claimed the 2025 MLS Golden Boot with 29 goals and 48 total goal contributions, and was named Landon Donovan MLS Most Valuable Player in 2024 and 2025, the first back-to-back winner.

He helped Inter Miami reach the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup round of 16. His free-kick in a 2-1 win over FC Porto made the club the first from Concacaf to defeat a European opponent in official competition, and the first United States team to win a match at the tournament.

Messi is Inter Miami's all-time leader for both goals and assists, with 87 goals and 57 assists in 101 appearances. The 38-year-old from Rosario, Argentina has 46 team trophies, plus a record eight Ballon d'Or titles, three The Best FIFA Men's Player awards and two FIFA World Cup Golden Balls.
