Matchday 26 served up controversy in Leverkusen, a setback for Wolfsburg and a landmark for Luca Reggiani. As reported by Get German Football News, the Saturday afternoon slate delivered drama across the Bundesliga.
Leverkusen led early through Aleix Garcia for Kasper Hjulmand’s side before the contest descended into officiating drama. Jonathan Tah had a goal chalked off for handball, then Bayern went down to 10 when Nicolas Jackson’s yellow for fouling Martin Terrier was upgraded to red.
After the break Leverkusen were sloppy. Harry Kane’s apparent equaliser after a Janis Blaswich error was overturned by VAR, then the Bundesliga leaders did level as Luis Diaz made it 1-1, before Diaz was sent off for a second yellow for diving.
Jonas Hofmann’s 93rd-minute strike was then ruled offside. In all there were two reds, three disallowed goals and four VAR interventions. The rivals meet again next month in the DFB Pokal semi-final at the BayArena.
In Dieter Hecking’s first game, Wolfsburg laboured to a 1-1 draw at Hoffenheim despite leading. They mustered two shots on target, including Konstantinos Koulierakis’s opener, were outpassed 261 to 537, and were pegged back by Grischa Prömel in the 83rd minute. Mohamed Amoura partnered Dzenan Pejcinovic up front, yet the display offered little encouragement for the survival fight.
At Dortmund, Luca Reggiani scored his first Bundesliga goal against Augsburg after a first start weeks ago. Eintracht Frankfurt beat Heidenheim 1-0, with only one loss under Albert Riera and three successive clean sheets.
