The extension was a clear commitment to the Swabians from the winger, who put speculation about his future to rest for the time being by signing the deal.

"It was clear to me from the start that if VfB wanted to extend my contract, I would be very happy to do so," Leweling told Sky Germany.

"VfB took me in when I was at my lowest point and have made me what I am today. They have supported me from the very bottom to the point where I am now an experienced Bundesliga and national team player who is playing in the Champions League.

"I didn't even have to think about it. I signed the contract straight away. Of course you negotiate, but it was clear to me that I wanted to stay here," said Leweling.

Before the extension was announced, Leweling had been linked with a move to Manchester United. Commenting on the Red Devils' interest, he said:

“Of course it's a dream to play for such a big club in the future. But I think it's important for me to get playing time at a club that supports me. And that's why I'm staying here at VfB.”

Having been out for several weeks with a hamstring injury, Leweling is now looking forward to returning to action.

"It was my first real injury as a professional. It was really tough. Especially because I was in such a good mood, and when you have a setback like that, it's not nice, but it's part of the game. In professional sport and in life in general," he explained.

“I slowed down a bit. You have to feel your way through it. But I feel better and better from training session to training session. I'll be in top form against Augsburg at the latest.”

Leweling and Stuttgart face Augsburg away in the Bundesliga on Sunday.
