Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo: Silvestre says MLS would make more sense as rivals | OneFootball

Mikael Silvestre believes Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo should be on opposing MLS teams rather than the same side if Ronaldo ever crosses the Atlantic.

“I don't know if he would want to go to the US, but definitely that's something that you can't take out of the picture for him. If he plays in Saudi, he can play anywhere to be honest. I wouldn't rule this out,” Silvestre said, speaking to Goal.com.

“I think it would make more sense to have them in a different team and compete against each other. It would be more attractive, more fun. I don't think they can be in the same dressing room... In terms of Messi’s mind, being the leader, you can only have one.”

Messi joined Inter Miami in 2023 and has delivered the Leagues Cup, Supporters’ Shield and MLS Cup, alongside multiple MVP awards. He has been reunited with Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets and Luis Suarez, while Rodrigo De Paul and Casemiro have also arrived.

Former Manchester United forward Giuseppe Rossi said: “I don't want to see Messi and Ronaldo together. That would be kind of weird. Just keep them separate. If Ronaldo wants to play in the US... Orlando. So at least they could have a good rivalry there.”

Robert Earnshaw added: “If there was a place that could happen, it would be somewhere like Inter Miami. Unfortunately, I don’t think it will ever happen... but if there was a chance, I think David Beckham would be the one to make that happen.”

Ronaldo has a year left on his Al-Nassr deal and has spoken of playing with his son Cristiano Jr. Messi is contracted in Miami through 2028, so a reunion in the U.S. remains possible.
