Sunderland face a decision on Lutsharel Geertruida’s future after a campaign that ended with Europa League qualification, with the defender attracting interest from the Premier League and Europe.
SportsBoom claims Liverpool retain an interest in the 20-times capped Netherlands international and would face competition from Aston Villa, Everton, Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace, with clubs in Italy, Germany, France and Spain also watching. The outlet describes a decision over his next move as ‘looming’.
Geertruida joined on loan from RB Leipzig during a hectic summer window and made 30 appearances in all competitions as Regis Le Bris’s side finished seventh.
He started Sunderland’s final three matches, but the club are yet to trigger the reported £20 million purchase option agreed with Leipzig last August. There was speculation Liverpool explored a January move, with an enquiry said to have been made late in the window.
Le Bris has praised Geertruida’s versatility and said it makes him highly useful across the squad, even if it complicates settling in one role. He noted the player’s aim to be a regular starter and that World Cup ambitions factor into decisions. At the time, he suggested whether to sign permanently was not clear.
Uncertainty remains over whether Geertruida will be at the Stadium of Light next season.
