Richard Hughes still has a lot of work to do at Liverpool before the summer transfer window slams shut.

Most people expected the Englishman to be at the centre of another rebuild, especially after the Reds only just mustered up a fifth-place finish.

Liverpool's fanbase expects and awful lot more than that from their team so, if the best way for them to deliver that is to bring in new players, that's why Hughes needs to do.

Many players have already been linked with a move this summer but, the perfect opportunity to solve two of their main problems has just arisen.

And, if Liverpool don't take the deal, they'll almost certainly regret it.

Liverpool should offer AC Milan a swap deal which includes Fikayo Tomori and Joe Gomez

One of the main areas that Liverpool need to bolster this summer is their defence.

Ibrahima Konate has exited and, since Giovanni Leoni and Jeremy Jacquet have never played in England's top flight before, it's unclear whether they'll be able to meet the standards expected of them or not.

Joe Gomez is another option that the Reds have at their disposal but, since he's already side-lined due to injury, now feels like the best time to get him gone.

Over the last few years, all AC Milan have wanted is to welcome Gomez to the San Siro.

In almost every window, the Serie A outfit have thrown their hat into the ring to sign the Englishman but, every time they approached Liverpool about a deal, it just wasn't the right time.

However, since Milan would be adding a new centre-back to their ranks in Gomez, they could be willing to let Fikayo Tomori go which would certainly be of interest to Liverpool.

Tomori has been linked with a return to England for years now.

The 28-year-old has been an AC Milan player since the 2020-21 campaign and has quickly become one of their most important defenders.

His best position is obviously as a centre-back but, thanks to his lightning-quick speed, he's also been used as a right-back on occasion.

These are two areas that Liverpool really need to add depth in and, to make things even sweeter, Tomori would be classed as homegrown.

As mentioned, Tomori's speed is one of the things that sets him apart from other defenders and, since Premier League attackers only seem to be getting faster and stronger, speed is likely to be one of the most important things to a centre-back in years to come.

This, coupled with the fact that Virgil van Dijk is now 35 years old means that change is coming.

At the moment, Van Dijk is still the Reds' best centre-back but, if he leaves at the end of the 2026-27 season, it's unclear which player would be able to fill the void he'd leave behind.

Tomori's injury history is obviously a slight worry but, at 28 years old, he still has a fair few years left at the top and, if Gomez can be used as part of a swap deal, the transfer would probably work out quite well for both parties.

Here's hoping that some movement takes place over the next few weeks and Tomori emerges as a potential target for the Reds.
