Liverpool’s summer recruitment plans have taken a subtle twist after fresh comments reported by the Daily Mirror cast doubt on claims that Zeki Celik is bound for Juventus.
With Liverpool FC expected to strengthen defensively ahead of next season, the Roma full back has emerged as a credible option. His contract situation makes him particularly intriguing. The 29 year old is due to become a free agent at the end of the campaign.

Speculation in Italy had suggested an agreement with Juventus was already in place. That narrative has now been challenged directly by his representative, Fazil Ozdemir.
“The rumours that Zeki has reached an agreement with a club are not accurate.
“He currently plays for a major club, and it is natural that major teams in Italy and England would show interest in a player competing at this level and that his name would be associated with those clubs.
“His contract with Roma expires at the end of the season; however, he has great respect for the club. At this stage, he is not focusing on contractual or transfer matters. His full attention and commitment are focused on supporting Roma in achieving its objectives.
“We believe that all other matters will be addressed and resolved in due course, in a professional and respectful manner.”
Those words reopen the conversation. Liverpool and Manchester City have both been credited with interest. If Juventus have not secured a deal, the landscape shifts.
Liverpool’s need for clarity at the back is clear. Ibrahima Konate is entering the final months of his contract, and although discussions are ongoing, there is no certainty.
Arne Slot has been open about the situation. “We are in talks with him so that tells you what we want. It’s clear we would like him to stay but negotiations are ongoing so let’s see where that ends.

“We wouldn’t be in negotiations if we didn’t want him to stay. It’s just as good from Ibou as from Virgil to stay fit, I’m sure there is a difference in age and that sometimes plays a part as well. Ibou has had a very good spell recently.
“He had a lot of good games earlier in the season but then he was also part of the reason why we conceded a goal. His general performances were good but then a small mistake he made immediately led to a goal and so he was judged differently.
“But he has had a very good partnership with Virgil since I’ve been here and, just like Virgil, he has always been fit. Touch wood. These two are vital for us, not only because of the quality they have but because of the lack of options we have behind.”
That final line speaks volumes. Depth is limited. Injuries can distort a season in weeks.
Celik has made 137 appearances for Roma since arriving from Lille in 2022, helping them reach a Europa League final. He brings durability and big match exposure. For a Liverpool side balancing domestic and European ambitions, that matters.
Whether this develops into concrete interest will depend on contract talks elsewhere. Yet the agent’s intervention has ensured the door remains ajar.
For Liverpool, this feels like sensible business rather than glamour chasing. Celik would not arrive with superstar billing, but that is rarely the point. What matters is reliability and availability.
Konate’s situation is unsettling. Fans want him tied down, but until pen meets paper there is uncertainty. Hearing Slot admit that options behind his first choice pairing are limited only reinforces that concern.
A free transfer, or close to it, appeals in a market where fees spiral quickly. Celik’s experience in Serie A and European competition suggests he would not be overawed. He has navigated high pressure nights and long campaigns.
Supporters also recognise that squad building requires layers. One injury at centre back can derail momentum, especially in tight contests where margins are fine. Adding depth now could prevent problems later.
There is no guarantee this move happens. Still, the fact Juventus have not sealed it offers encouragement. If Liverpool believe he fits the profile, this is the type of opportunity they should seize.
