As Liverpool prepare to return to Premier League action on Monday against Brighton & Hove Albion, the dust from their title celebrations is yet to settle. But while medals have been collected and minds briefly rested, the gears of transfer business have already begun to churn. Arne Slot’s reign as Liverpool manager is shifting swiftly into gear, with summer reinforcements already the order of the day.
In what is shaping up to be one of the earliest transfer coups of the summer, Jeremie Frimpong is reportedly on the verge of completing a move to Liverpool. According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, the Bayer Leverkusen full-back is set for a medical within 48 hours, having agreed a five-year deal at Anfield. The Reds are expected to trigger his release clause of around £30 million.

David Lynch echoed the report, stating that Frimpong’s arrival will mark Arne Slot’s third signing since assuming managerial duties. With Slot seeking attacking intent from the flanks, Frimpong’s electric pace and end-product could be a timely addition. The ECHO underlined Liverpool’s intent, noting their focus on strengthening the full-back department – an area long reliant on the world-class talents of Trent Alexander-Arnold and the emerging Conor Bradley.
Bradley, meanwhile, has committed his long-term future to the club by signing a new four-year deal, following in the footsteps of Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk in reaffirming their Anfield allegiance. Continuity remains crucial, but so does evolution – and Frimpong signals the latter.
The Reds’ recent 2-2 draw with Arsenal saw Trent Alexander-Arnold’s brief cameo spark debate, particularly in light of reports linking him with a Liverpool exit. However, Arne Slot, calm and composed, was quick to defuse the speculation and emphasise the club’s focus on the final two fixtures of the season.
It’s an important message from the Dutch coach, who has inherited a dressing room full of winners but also questions – not least over contract renewals and positional evolution. Amid the Alexander-Arnold noise, Slot appears determined to build forward, not dwell on uncertainty.
While Frimpong seems destined for Merseyside, fellow Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz finds himself at the centre of a transfer storm. Reports out of Germany have linked the 22-year-old with Bayern Munich, Manchester City, and Liverpool. But it’s the Reds who appear to have made the first decisive move.
“What is clear is that Liverpool are interested in the 22-year-old and have made it known to his representatives,” the ECHO reported, reinforcing the club’s intent to compete at the top table for generational talent.
The final day of the Bundesliga season only intensified the speculation, with Wirtz rumoured to have toured Manchester City’s training ground – claims later debunked when it emerged his trip to England was to meet Liverpool instead.
That prompted Bayern Munich director Uli Hoeness to intervene publicly, ridiculing the transfer rumours:“You’ve been writing nonsense for weeks about him going to Manchester City, even though he was at Liverpool,” he snapped.“We’ll provide you with facts at some point, not more speculation!”
Hoeness’s ire underlined just how fevered the pursuit of Wirtz has become. While reports of a verbal agreement with Bayern were swiftly dismissed in Germany, the fact that he has already engaged with Liverpool representatives gives the Premier League champions a genuine edge.
Fresh off a title-winning campaign, Liverpool’s transfer strategy is clear: act early, act decisively. Slot has inherited a high-functioning machine, but even the best need recalibrating. The signings of Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai last summer laid a new midfield foundation. Now, the emphasis is on bolstering the flanks and injecting further creative spark.
Frimpong’s signing could be sealed within days. Wirtz’s future remains tangled in intrigue, but Liverpool are very much in the race. With the transfer window about to open, the Reds are wasting no time in shaping a squad capable of defending their crown.
