In a recent post on X, The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards claimed that Liverpool could move in for AZ Alkmaar midfielder Kees Smit. It is believed that the Reds are in the mix to land the Dutch youngster this summer.

Smit’s Impressive Rise In Dutch Football

The 20-year-old managed to catch the eye with his performances for Alkmaar at the centre of the park in the previous campaign. Smit made 46 appearances for the Dutch club last season, finding the back of the net five times and earning ten assists in all competitions.

The Dutch sensation is currently among the best young playmakers in the Eredivisie. Hence, it is no wonder that the Reds are in the running to secure his services this off-season.

His current contract at the Dutch club will run out in the summer of 2028, which could make it tough for the Reds to sign him on the cheap later this year.

What Will Smit Bring To Liverpool?

Smit is a solid tackler of the ball and can time his challenges well to earn possession back for his side in the middle of the park. He doesn’t mind clearing his lines when required and is a tidy passer as well.

The Dutch talent can shoot the ball with power from long range and has got the vision to create some inviting chances for his teammates to score. Smit is full of energy and running at the centre of the park and can chip in by scoring and creating a handful of important goals for his team. He is primarily a box-to-box midfielder but can also serve as a defensive midfielder or play in the number ten position if asked to do so.

Smit would bring more quality and depth to Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola’s midfield. He has what it takes to challenge for a regular first-team spot at the Merseyside club in the future.

At 20, Smit has the potential to be a world-class player in his position someday. Therefore, he would be a good fit for the Reds to consider in the long run. However, only time will tell whether Smit can make a smooth transition to life in the Premier League.
