Liverpool discover their IDEAL midfielder

Liverpool didn’t add any new midfielders to the squad over the summer.

It means Arne Slot’s side will contest this season with the same array of players in the position.

Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai will play most of the football in midfield - while Curtis Jones and to a lesser extent Wataru Endo will also receive game time.

With Florian Wirtz added to the squad, it means Szoboszlai will likely compete with Mac Allister this term for a first-team position.

Liverpool's midfield transfer links

Transfer links to midfielders have been relatively thin on the ground in the last few months. Anfield Watch brought you news of interest in Nico Gonzalez, Samuele Ricci and Mikel Jauregizar - but all have either signed new contracts or moved elsewhere.

So what might Liverpool’s plans be going forward if they do decide to add a midfielder? This is a position that hasn’t had a major refit since 2023 - when practically all the current midfield options - Jones aside - arrived.

The Germany international is well-liked at a host of top English and European clubs. Spanish media would have you believe he’s a Real Madrid player in waiting - but it’s by no means a guarantee the 24-year-old Stuttgart star ends up at the Bernabeu.

Liverpool back in the hunt for Angelo Stiller

A new report in TEAMtalk confirms that Liverpool and Arsenal - as well as two unnamed Premier League teams believed to be Manchester United and Tottenham - are leading the chase for Stiller.

He could move on as soon as January but owing to a complex contractual wrinkle it’s more likely that Stiller moves in 2026.

The midfielder is reported to have a €40m release clause in his contract - which becomes active in summer 2026. That would represent bargain value for one of Europe’s emerging midfield stars - but Stuttgart can remove it with a payment of €2m.

Otherwise, Stiller is under contract until 2027 and if his club decide to listen to bids then there will be a big clamour for his signature.

Stiller aligns with Liverpool philosophy

“Liverpool, transitioning under Arne Slot, view him as a long-term addition to their hard working engine room, with his versatility and ball-playing ability aligning with their high-pressing philosophy,” the report reads.

Stiller is a product of the Bayern Munich academy - playing three times for the first team before joining Hoffenheim in 2021. In 2023 he joined Stuttgart where his game has gone from strength to strength.

Not only has he established himself as full Germany international but he can count himself as a 2024/25 DFB-Pokal (German cup) winner.

It remains to be seen what the future holds for Stiller but let’s hope Liverpool can win the fight for the midfielder.
