Liverpool stretched their perfect start to the defence of their Premier League title to five wins from five with a 2-1 triumph over Everton in the Merseyside derby at Anfield.
The Reds came flying out of the blocks, carving out chances almost immediately and taking the lead inside ten minutes.
Mohamed Salah picked up the ball on the edge of the area and curled a perfect pass into the path of Ryan Gravenberch, who timed his late run into the box perfectly. Meeting the ball on the bounce, the Dutch midfielder steered it into the far corner to put Liverpool ahead.
Not long after, Gravenberch turned provider. Just before the half-hour mark, he slid a pass through for Hugo Ekitike, who slotted past Jordan Pickford with a composed finish to double Liverpool’s lead.
The visitors grew into the contest after the break and halved the deficit on 58 minutes. Jack Grealish’s cross to the far post was knocked down by Iliman Ndiaye, leaving Gana Gueye to lash home an unstoppable drive that gave Alisson Becker no chance.
The Toffees pressed hard in the final half-hour in search of an equaliser but were unable to carve out a clear opening, as the champions stood firm to see out the victory.
The result keeps Liverpool’s 100% league record intact and leaves them top of the table, with David Moyes’ men remain in seventh.
