Andoni Iraola to Liverpool: Sky Sports report seen as major clue

On Anfield Index’s Media Matters podcast, Dave Davis and David Lynch turned from Arne Slot’s Liverpool exit to the growing expectation around Andoni Iraola. The key point was not just that Iraola’s name had emerged, but that a Sky Sports News report from a couple of days ago appeared to have offered a significant hint about the Liverpool job.

Davis framed the discussion around Liverpool’s possible next move, noting the Bournemouth links through Richard Hughes and asking whether this could be “a pretty easy deal to complete, realistically”. Lynch’s response was direct. “Yeah, I think it will be him to be honest,” he said, before pointing to the Sky Sports News report as one of the strongest indicators.

Lynch explained: “I saw that Sky Sports News report the other day where it was like he wanted Liverpool and he was hanging on from Crystal Palace.” He then added the line that gave the report its weight: “What do you know there then? That’s interesting that Liverpool are getting mentioned there.”

For Liverpool supporters, that was the intriguing part. Iraola being linked was one thing. A report suggesting he “wanted Liverpool” and was waiting while other possibilities lingered was something more pointed.

Liverpool links made the timing significant

The context mattered. Liverpool had just moved on from Slot, and the podcast was trying to understand whether Iraola was simply a candidate or the clear front runner. Lynch leaned strongly towards the latter.

He said Iraola “clearly knew that this was a possibility”, because “the fact he didn’t kind of progress with Palace or Leverkusen” and was “keeping them at arm’s length” felt “indicative”.

That wording was careful, but telling. Lynch did not present it as a confirmed appointment. He treated it as a pattern of behaviour that made sense only if Iraola had reason to believe Liverpool could become available. In his view, the Sky Sports report made that interpretation harder to ignore.

Davis also noted the existing connections, saying there were “Bournemouth connections galore”, including “Richard Hughes”. That added another layer. Iraola had worked at Bournemouth, Hughes had strong Bournemouth ties, and Liverpool’s football structure appeared to have the relationships needed to make a move plausible.

Alonso connection added another clue

Lynch then introduced another detail. “The biggest indication of all for me,” he said, was that “Iraola and Alonso are both represented by the same people”. His reasoning was that if Xabi Alonso believed he had a chance of the Liverpool job, “he would have hung on”.

Lynch added that Alonso “probably will have known what direction they were going to go in if they did sack Slot”. In that reading, the representation link mattered because information around Liverpool’s thinking could have filtered through the same circles.

His conclusion was clear: “I think it kind of shows you really that it’s probably going to be Iriola.” He went even further, saying Liverpool were “almost in a position now where you say you’d be surprised if it isn’t”.

Iraola style fits Liverpool’s stated direction

The report was not discussed in isolation. Lynch and Davis also connected Iraola’s candidacy to the type of football Liverpool seemed to want. Davis said there was “nothing slow” about Iraola’s style, and Lynch agreed: “No, absolutely.”

Lynch described Iraola’s Bournemouth team as “fantastic to watch” and said Liverpool supporters would get an “aggressive, urgent style of play”. He also said that from what Liverpool were saying about wanting that style, Iraola “just ticks that box”.

As Lynch put it, “you get the impression he’s the front runner”. For a Liverpool fanbase looking for clues, the Sky Sports update looked less like background noise and more like a signpost.
