And to finance those deals, sporting director Richard Hughes opted to cut ties with several Premier League title winners. Out went Darwin Nunez, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Harvey Elliott, Jarell Quansah and others - with plenty of cash generated through sales.

Another who was subjected to a sale was Luis Diaz. The 28-year-old winger had probably his best ever season at Anfield - scoring 13 times in the league - but his uncertain contract situation led to him being sold to Bayern Munich.

Bayern wanted Gakpo before Diaz

Liverpool earned around £65m for the Colombian - with his departure meaning Cody Gakpo winning the battle for the Reds’ left-wing starting berth.

The 26-year-old has gone on to sign a new contract at Anfield - tying his long-term future to the club. But the Dutch international has now ADMITTED that it could have been him and not Diaz heading to the Allianz Arena.

Gakpo was very much on the radar for the German champions - but clearly Vincent Kompany was told ‘no’ when he came knocking for the former PSV captain.

Gakpo set for key role

"From what I understand, they did come, but they ended up buying Luis Díaz," Gakpo told ESPN.

Gakpo has been at the club since January 2023 - going on to win the Premier League title last season.

In truth the attacking player looked somewhat of an awkward fit under Jurgen Klopp with the former Liverpool boss playing him everywhere other than his preferred position on the left.
