Liverpool made several alterations to their Premier League title-winning frontline last summer.

Out went Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz - with room in the squad being made to accommodate plenty of new faces. We saw Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak arrive on British record deals - while Hugo Ekitike and Jeremie Frimpong were also brought to the club.

One player expected to make way but who ended up staying through the summer transfer window meanwhile was Federico Chiesa.

The Italian, 28, suffered a poor season on a personal level - clocking up only one top-flight start which came long after the title was secured.

Chiesa weighing up Juventus move

Signed from Juventus on deadline day in September 2024 on a contract until 2028, it was clear early on that Chiesa’s Liverpool career wasn’t working out.

However he defied those expectations over the summer - forcing his way into Arne Slot’s thinking. The Italian international has played a lot more regularly this season - scoring two Premier League goals - albeit as a centre-forward option rather than a winger.

But there is no doubt that he will remain on the fringes once everyone is back fit and available - leading to speculation that he could leave the club in January.

Determined to prove himself on Merseyside, it’s not yet known whether Chiesa would accept a move back to Italy this winter but Juventus have come forward with their interest.

Chiesa wants to prove himself

Juve were reported earlier this week to be keen on adding Chiesa to their squad for the second half of the season on a loan deal. And now a report in TEAMtalk states that Chiesa is currently weighing up the offer to return to his former club.

“It’s definitely one that could open up but he needs to be fully on board,” the report reads.

“A problem Juve have is that Chiesa has been extremely determined to prove himself at Liverpool, almost to a fault. Really he should have left in the summer, his chances have been so few and far between, and he never gets a chance to truly build form.

“So now that they are touching base about trying to get him back to Italy, the top thing they want to discover is about the player’s desire.”

In a fully-stocked Liverpool attack Chiesa will be behind Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike at centre-forward while Mo Salah, Jeremie Frimpong or Dominik Szoboszlai would all lock down a starting place on the right ahead of the former Fiorentina talent.

Therefore if he wants regular first-team football a move back to Serie A could appeal. Chiesa is very much a fan favourite at Anfield but it’s clear his status among supporters isn’t matched by Slot.
