As of 9 March 2026, Florian Wirtz has successfully made his return to action for Liverpool, providing a significant boost to Arne Slot’s squad ahead of their Champions League knockout tie.

Wirtz made his competitive comeback on 6 March, playing the final 21 minutes of Liverpool’s 3-1 FA Cup victory over Wolves. After missing three matches, the 22-year-old took to social media to share his excitement, posting: "Good to be back on the pitch!" His return provides a critical boost for Arne Slot ahead of the Champions League round-of-16 first leg against Galatasaray in Istanbul tomorrow, 10 March. Reports suggest Wirtz is in contention to start, likely moving Dominik Szoboszlai into a deeper role.

Season Production and "Reds Roundtable"

Despite a slow start to his debut campaign following a £116 million move, Wirtz hit a rich vein of form in early 2026, tallying four goals and two assists in January. Off the pitch, he appeared in a "Reds Roundtable" episode on Monday, discussing his close friendship with fellow summer signing Jeremie Frimpong. Wirtz remains under contract until June 2030, with Liverpool viewing him as the cornerstone of their creative future.

Florian Wirtz's contract

Florian Wirtz only signed with Liverpool in the summer and has a long-term contract, running through 2030. However, the Reds sign players on the basis that they can quickly agree new contracts and boost their salary if they earn it on the pitch.

Wirtz is primed for such a raise. He's now the sixth-best-paid player at Liverpool, per Capology, below Cody Gakpo.

We can't imagine things stay that way for long. After all, Wirtz is primed to be the lead creator for Liverpool - the one running the attack post-Mo Salah.

That's a player who will command an enormous wage. Similar to what Salah earns, in fact, and Gravenberch's contract of near-£300k each week greenlights any demand above that from Wirtz going forward.

He will, with any luck, feel he's the most important attacking player in the side. That makes Gravenberch's salary something of a benchmark that any such player will want to beat.

Wirtz still needs to earn it, of course, but we fully expect him to. A monster contract demand is coming and Liverpool will simply have to pay up.
