Liverpool completed £450m worth of transfer spending last summer.

The Reds’ sporting director Richard Hughes was intent on upgrading the Arne Slot’s Premier League title-winning squad. In came the likes of Giorgi Mamardashvili, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Giovanni Leoni and Hugo Ekitike.

And the Anfield club were also content to conclude not one but TWO British record transfers. Firstly, Florian Wirtz was acquired from Bayer Leverkusen for a fee that could eventually reach £116m.

But Liverpool blew that deal out of the water on transfer deadline day when Alexander Isak was finally brought to the club for £125m.

Alexander Isak's tough start

The Swede, 26, was coming off the back of a 23-goal season for Newcastle in the top flight - and looked a sure bet to succeed on Merseyside.

However there is no getting away from the fact that Isak has struggled at the outset of his Liverpool career.

A lack of match fitness and subsequent injuries have hampered his start to life at the Premier League champions - and he is currently well beneath Ekitike in the Reds’ striker rankings.

Van de Ven names Isak as TOUGHEST opponent

Isak has only managed two goals across 15 overall appearances - against Southampton in the EFL Cup and against West Ham in the Premier League earlier this month.

Having committed so much money on Isak - and signing him to a six-year contract - Liverpool need him to come good.

However Liverpool have been given big hope over Isak by Micky van de Ven - Tottenham’s highly-rated centre-back.

The 24-year-old was quizzed by Gary Neville for the Overlap this week - revealing that Isak was his TOUGHEST Premier League opponent.

Isak is on a different level says Van de Ven

“The game we played against Newcastle, when we lost — and the game slipped as well — but this game Isak was a different level,” he admitted.

“So at this point I was like, he’s a top-class player. I knew he was top class, but in this game I was like, pfft.

“He can run in behind, he can come into the ball, he’s technical, he’s really good with the ball, he’s fast, and he has a top finish. So at that point he was literally everywhere.”

Van de Ven joined Spurs from Wolfsburg back in 2023 - and so has come up against all the big names in that time.

So this should serve as a reminder to Arne Slot to keep faith in Isak and soon he will once again have the best Premier League centre-backs trembling in fear.
