Liverpool have the PERFECT man to fix Manchester United

Liverpool have the perfect man to fix Manchester United on their books. Can’t see them getting him, mind.

It's that time of year again (September) and United are in turmoil like clockwork. That brilliant time of year when they have the best team in the league is now long gone and reality has come crashing down.

Erik ten Hag is under massive pressure after the 3-0 home defeat to Tottenham Hotspur and while United have given him that vote of confidence that managers love, it's difficult to actually believe it. They'll almost certainly be on the managerial hunt before long.

And so it's a massive shame for them that Liverpool have the perfect man to fix their club. They won't be getting him, of course.

Liverpool get there first

Arne Slot feels pretty unquestionably the perfect man to fix this United side. For one thing, he's done similar before - certainly with a far bigger impact than Ten Hag had managed.

Ten Hag took over Utrecht as manager in 2015 and performed well. He took them from 11th to 5th in the Eredivisie, then finished 4th in his second season. From there, he jumped to second-placed Ajax and won the title in his second season - 2018/19.

Then came further titles in 2021 and 2022 before the United job. It's a solid CV but not one that shows any fantastic ability to turn clubs around and build them into title winners.

Slot, on the other hand, has done that. He took over AZ in 2019 when they'd just finished 4th - 28 points behind Ten Hag's Ajax. By the time the 2019/20 season was abandoned, he had his underdog team level on points with Ajax at the top. They had been expected to overhaul them and win the title.

He was doing well in year two, as well, before being sacked for talking to Feyenoord. Slot then took that job for the 2021/22 campaign after Feyenoord had just finished 5th and 29 points behind Ajax.

In season one, Slot had cut that gap to 12 points, finished 3rd and made the UEFA Conference League final. In season two, he won the Eredivisie by seven points.

That's the kind of record United are after. Someone capable of raising a sleeping giant, generating cohesion and togetherness. To connect the club behind him and drive them forward, all while playing football that suits the top of the modern game.

United could actually use Slot a whole lot more than Liverpool could, given the Reds don't need a massive rebuild. Arne even plays a similar style to the one Ten Hag has tried to implement. He would be the perfect fit as a head coach who can move the idea up a level and build a team year-on-year towards the title.

Slot's done it before, after all. But he won't be doing it at Old Trafford. Liverpool got there first.

United might have been able to grab him a year ago, if only they'd been quicker. Instead, they'll need to settle for someone else while Slot's name is sung around Anfield.
