Liverpool’s search for a long-term successor to Virgil van Dijk has quietly intensified, with Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni emerging as a leading candidate. The Italian international has built a reputation as one of Europe’s most composed ball-playing defenders, and his profile fits neatly with Liverpool’s evolving defensive blueprint.
According to reporting from TEAMtalk, Liverpool believe Bastoni represents the “ideal successor” to Van Dijk as they plan for the future of their back line. The Dutchman has been a cornerstone of Liverpool’s modern era, but planning beyond his tenure is now part of the club’s strategic thinking.
Bastoni’s credentials are clear. At 26, he has already amassed vast experience at the highest level with Inter Milan, helping anchor one of Serie A’s most organised defensive systems. His strengths lie not only in traditional centre-back duties but also in the progressive side of the game. Comfortable stepping into midfield, capable of breaking lines with crisp passing, and calm when pressed, Bastoni offers the kind of distribution Liverpool have long valued from the back.
Liverpool’s recruitment team have closely monitored the defender’s situation, believing his technical qualities align perfectly with their build-from-the-back philosophy. For a side that has historically relied on defenders capable of initiating attacks, Bastoni’s style could represent a seamless transition into the next era.
However, Liverpool are far from alone in the race.

Barcelona are currently believed to be leading the pursuit for Bastoni, with the Catalan club determined to strengthen their defensive ranks ahead of next season.
Sources cited by TEAMtalk indicate growing confidence inside the Camp Nou hierarchy that they can secure the defender’s signature. Sporting director Deco and head coach Hansi Flick are said to view Bastoni as a priority target who could bring both composure and leadership to Barcelona’s back line.
Spanish reports suggest early enquiries have already taken place. The optimism in Barcelona stems from positive initial conversations with Bastoni’s representatives, although financial realities remain a significant factor in negotiations.
Inter Milan are believed to value the defender at more than €80 million, with the price potentially rising to €100 million, roughly £86.5 million. That valuation reflects not only Bastoni’s current level but also his importance to Inter’s long-term project.
Despite Barcelona’s confidence, the club’s financial constraints could complicate any deal. The La Liga giants have been navigating strict economic controls in recent seasons, and any major signing requires careful balancing of their wage structure and transfer budget.
Liverpool’s interest is significant, but they are not the only Premier League club keeping a close watch on Bastoni.
Arsenal are also monitoring the situation closely. Manager Mikel Arteta is believed to admire Bastoni’s leadership and technical qualities, seeing him as a player capable of thriving within Arsenal’s possession-heavy system. His ability to operate comfortably in a high defensive line would make him an appealing addition for the North London side.
Manchester United have also been linked with the Inter Milan defender. Some reports previously suggested they might be willing to match Inter’s substantial asking price in an effort to reinforce their defence.
However, sources have suggested United may not currently be leading the race, leaving the primary battle between Barcelona and Liverpool for now.
Interest from multiple elite clubs highlights just how highly Bastoni is rated across European football. Few defenders combine tactical intelligence, physical presence and ball-playing ability as effectively as the Italian.
While speculation continues to grow around Bastoni, Inter Milan remain determined to keep hold of one of their most valuable players.
The defender is currently under contract with the Serie A giants until 2028, placing Inter in a strong negotiating position. Reports suggest the club are already considering a contract extension that could tie him down until 2030, further strengthening their stance against potential suitors.
Inter view Bastoni as central to their sporting project. Losing him would represent a significant blow to a team built around defensive solidity and intelligent build-up play.
Bastoni himself has previously expressed contentment in Milan, enjoying both the club environment and the competitive challenges of Serie A. Yet the possibility of a move abroad continues to linger.
According to TEAMtalk’s report, the defender is believed to be intrigued by the prospect of playing in England. That factor alone could keep Liverpool firmly in contention if the opportunity to negotiate with Inter eventually arises.
For now, the situation remains finely balanced. Barcelona’s confidence contrasts with Liverpool’s strategic interest, while Inter Milan continue to resist any attempt to prise away one of their most prized assets.
If Bastoni does move this summer, the transfer could command one of the highest fees ever paid for a defender. For Liverpool, Barcelona and several others, the attraction is obvious: Bastoni represents both present quality and future leadership at the heart of defence.
