Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo was involved in training ahead of his side’s Champions League round of 16 second-leg clash with Paris St Germain.

The forward missed the first leg win over PSG and Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Southampton on Saturday with an ankle problem.

But he has been involved in training ahead of the return leg at Anfield in a boost for boss Arne Slot.

Gakpo has been in fine form this season, scoring 16 goals in 38 games in all competitions this season.

Asked if Gakpo was fit following the game against Southampton and if he was just being cautious with his forward, Slot insisted he was still not ready to play.

“No, otherwise I would have taken him because this was the most important game of the week, like I told you – and the first of three finals,” he said.

“So, if he would have been able then I would have definitely had him on the bench, but unfortunately he wasn’t. I do hope the next two finals we will play a bit better than the first one.”

The Reds will still remain without defenders Conor Bradley and Joe Gomez for the game with PSG, however.

Both are nursing thigh injuries and are not nearing a return.

Gakpo’s possible return comes as a timely boost for Liverpool, who edged past PSG in the first leg with a 1-0 win despite Slot admitting afterwards that his side were fortunate.

Speaking after his team’s win over Southampton, in which Liverpool found themselves a goal down at the break, Slot warned his side they will need to be much better if they are to progress in the Champions League.

“I think Paris Saint-Germain showed us the right example; they played Lille in incredible intensity, 4-0 up at half-time and then they played against us and that intensity I haven’t seen before in a game we’ve played this season,” he said.

“When I look at the game against PSG, we need to go one step up in terms of intensity. But if I compare it with the game today, we need to go three, four, five, six or seven steps up in terms of intensity if we want to have any chance of reaching the next round.”
