Atletico Madrid visit Anfield on Wednesday, but will Arne Slot’s squad be at full fitness?

Liverpool left it late to beat Burnley on Sunday, doing so by way of a 94th-minute Mohamed Salah penalty, but the headlines were elsewhere.

Supporters were shocked as British record signing Alexander Isak was left off the team sheet, when many had expected him to make his Liverpool debut at Turf Moor.

Further injury worries surfaced as Alexis Mac Allister was withdrawn in the second half, having undergone treatment after a heavy tackle from Lesley Ugochukwu, who was later sent off.

With a first Champions League outing of the season coming on Wednesday, Slot is sweating on the fitness of three key players.

Here’s everything you need to know about Liverpool’s injury situation...

Alexis Mac Allister

Alexis Mac Allister took a tumble in the second half of Liverpool’s meeting with Burnley, and received treatment before being withdrawn.

He had struggled with injury over the summer and has been in and out of the squad through pre-season.

But speaking at full-time, Arne Slot confirmed his issue was minor, saying the substitution was more down to tactics than an injury.

He said: “I had already made one substitution in the first half, so if I then take him off at 60 minutes that would be my second one. If I then want to make [another on] 75 then in the end I can do nothing anymore.

“So, that combined with the fact the tackle was a tackle he felt – and I am not surprised by the fact he felt that tackle, by the way – it was a combination of both. He said it was fine and good enough to go on, although he limped a lot.”

Alexander Isak

Alexander Isak was a surprise exclusion from the matchday squad as Liverpool visited Burnley. He is not thought to be fully match fit yet, having missed much of pre-season, but was still expected to make the bench in Lancashire.

Speaking ahead of the tie, Slot confirmed fans’ suspicions, saying: “As everybody knew, he did not have any team training at Newcastle, then went to the national team and only played there for 15-20 minutes.

“We think, with a week when we played three games in seven days, this is the best lead-up for him to be available against Atletico Madrid.”

Curtis Jones

Curtis Jones also missed the Burnley trip after picking up a knock against Arsenal before the international break.

“Curtis Jones, of course, I don’t know if you knew, but he got injured in the last game, so he will not be available for the game against Burnley,” said Slot.

No timeframe has been offered for his return, but his is not thought to be a serious issue.
