Liverpool supporters finally got their first glimpse of Hugo Ekitike in red as Arne Slot’s side took on Yokohama F. Marinos in Japan. Despite an early scare with tsunami warnings in the region, the pre-season match went ahead at the Nissan Stadium, offering fans a taste of what the Frenchman brings to the club.
Signed last week for £69 million from Eintracht Frankfurt, Ekitike was handed a start by Slot following Liverpool’s 2-1 loss to AC Milan. Slot, who led the Reds to the Premier League title in his debut season, chose a strong starting eleven, and all eyes were on his latest acquisition.
Ekitike featured in the centre of Liverpool’s front three and made an immediate impression. His clever movement, quick touches and a sharp backheel attempt nearly brought him a debut goal. While he didn’t get on the scoresheet, there was no doubt that fans were encouraged by his energy and intent.

Legendary midfielder Jan Molby, analysing for LFCTV, shared his take on Ekitike’s performance at the break.
“I think he’s done ok,” said Molby. “He’s a central striker and that area’s been crowded with Szoboszlai and Wirtz and the Japanese players in there, there’s not a lot of time.”
“He seems a willing runner, wanting to threaten in behind and be dangerous in that way. As of yet he hasn’t quite had the chance, he had the backheel which was great improvisation, but it was not quite to be. He’s willing and trying to look for areas to try and influence the game.”
Molby also pointed to the nerves that come with a high-profile debut. “He’ll be almost over-excited, his first opportunity to play for Liverpool. I’m sure he’s going to be fine, things will calm down and we’ll get on with the real stuff in the Premier League.”
So far in pre-season, Slot has been rotating heavily, trying out different combinations and systems. But against Yokohama, there was a sense that he was closing in on his preferred starting XI. Should this line-up begin the Premier League campaign, few would raise eyebrows.
Ekitike’s immediate involvement suggests that Slot is eager to embed him into the side quickly. His inclusion alongside the likes of Florian Wirtz and Conor Bradley underlines how Liverpool are reshaping their attacking identity.
While talk continues to swirl around a potential move for Alexander Isak, Ekitike’s presence gives Liverpool tactical flexibility. The Frenchman has spoken about his adaptability, capable of operating as a solo striker or in tandem with a partner, which could complement the dynamic style Slot demands.
With Alexis Mac Allister expected to play a key part in the midfield and the club’s search for more firepower ongoing, Ekitike’s role could shift as the season progresses. But what’s clear already is that he offers something different — physicality, intelligent movement and a sharp instinct in front of goal.
As pre-season draws to a close, Liverpool fans will be eager to see how Ekitike settles into life at Anfield. If his debut is any indication, he may soon become a vital piece in Slot’s Premier League puzzle.
